Each day is another chance
Another chance at what?
Maybe another bite at the apple
Or just maybe
Another day not to take a bite out of the apple
That forbidden fruit

What is forbidden?
Self-satisfaction
And we know this because
If God were satisfied with our results
We wouldn’t need another chance

We might even say
This entire civilization we’ve wrought
Outside the Garden of Eden
Is just the result of our efforts
To satisfy ourselves

But like Ikea furniture that you’d take apart if you weren’t exhausted
From putting it together backwards
Our civilization is finally finished
And though we can’t see ourselves
Since the vanity mirror is on backwards
It looks like we’re finished, too

Unless this is a turning point
And we turn back to God
Realizing our mistake
Which was convincing ourselves
That God could never be satisfied
And then turning our self-deception
Into self-satisfaction
While taking the proof of God’s satisfaction–
Shabbos–
And turning it into a day for getting chores done
So that instead of a life of work and rest
We find that each day
All seven of them
Is another chore

But, miracle of miracles
I woke up today
As did you
So God is telling us there’s a chance!

Only, it’s not a one in a million chance
It’s a guarantee:
If we work today
Like there’s no tomorrow
And tomorrow, and tomorrow
And tomorrow, and tomorrow
Then we will know that Shabbos is always there
Because Shabbos isn’t one in seven
Shabbos is seven in one
And God is one
