I used to think the way it works is
if it’s true
then you believe it
Later, I thought
if you believe it
then it will come true
Now I understand that belief
never had anything to do with truth–
Truth is God’s business
while belief is a human affair
that’s always a measure of a person’s courage

Enough, then, with the God of love
when modern love is so very often the cover
for the cowardice of veiled aggression
We stand before the God of truth
and the truth hurts
not because we always hurt the ones we love
but because the greatest love of all
isn’t learning to love yourself
it’s learning the truth about yourself:
You will die trying
