The Dude Abides
Abiding means to wait
expectantly, defiantly, or submissively
and I typically manage all three
in the grocery store checkout line
even in the express lane
where the default setting
is expectant but defiance sets in
when I’m one jar of Hellmann’s
over the 15 item limit
and submissive when
at Whole Foods
they ask if I have Prime
and I do but I can’t
get the app to work
so I just say no
and reclaim my dignity
by feeling virtuous for
sparing the express lane clerk
my non-digital native song and dance
