It Takes Time to Make Love Work
My first meeting with God was very short–
I knocked on the door and said
“Excuse me?”
God didn’t look up from what He was doing
As He calmly and firmly explained
“No excuses.
You’re excused.”
It took me many lifetimes to understand that
You can’t rationalize God’s actions
And many lifetimes more to see that
I can’t stop rationalizing my own
But I can make better choices
Based on God’s irrational decision
To always give me another chance
My last meeting with God went on forever–
Before I could even knock, God said
“Come in, and please excuse the mess.
You’re the new help, yes?
I’ve been busier than ever
And we’ve got a lot of work ahead of us.”
