Measure Up

“Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you criticize them, you are a mile away from them and you have their shoes.” -
Jack Handey

When will I ever be enough?
When will I ever measure up?
Tis the question I ask often
Will I find the path to heaven?

Nights are gloomy before I sleep
I crawl to a cocoon and weep
When will I ever be happy?
Or achieve contentment maybe?

When will I wake up feeling great?
It has been a very long wait
Will the skies be forever gray?
I’m praying for a cloud-free day

Pray hopelessness soon desert me
Then days be fun and worry-free
Begone bitter melancholy
That for once I can be jolly!

The midnight hours are the hardest
When the world is at its darkest
But then dawn peeks in the skyline
And brings with it morning sunshine

***

Lo! I wake and open my eyes
Morning sun’s bright, deep blue the skies
A surge of blissfulness fills me
I raise my arms, at last I’m free

The pleasing warmth of the sun’s rays
Cure for grief and sadness always
Light conquers darkness doubtlessly
And moments pass by merrily!
