Enough

By the time Abraham and Isaac climbed Mt. Moriah
Human beings had long since evolved to
Survive danger and avoid death
Long enough to overcome death
By reproducing and raising offspring–
It was our raison d’etre

But it wasn’t reason enough
Because the greatest source of danger and death
Had fast become our fellow man

Maybe God could have gone over it
Or under it
Or even around it
But God went through it
By going through with it,
Demanding that Abraham sacrifice the one thing
More valuable than his own life
Demanding, that is
That Abraham find another reason for living
And while Abraham was already acquainted with God
Abraham’s decisiveness
Introduced God to the rest of us

Had Abraham failed the test
We would have all killed each other off by now
And the fact that we once again
Stand ready to wipe ourselves out
Just about one and a quarter centuries
Since we pronounced God dead
(In an echo of Isaac’s age of 125 when God made His demand)
Tells us everything that stands to reason:
The death of god will be the death of us
Because reason alone isn’t reason enough either
