One Summer Day

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the blue sky, is by no means waste of time.”
— John Lubbock

Muggy summer morning; the sun rising
From where the blue ocean meets the cyan sky
On tiny wavelets sun’s rays reflecting

Streaky cirrus clouds floating way up high
It will be bright and sun-filled all day long
The heat’s up; prompting a great hue and cry

The sandy beach awaits incoming throng
Little room will there be for sunbathing
Thousands in beach towels with just a thong

The sea is calm; teenagers windsurfing
Others out there, swimming by the sea wall
Lifeguards mindful, sharks that may be lurking

Miles away, boats with white sails looking small
A regatta moving towards the cape
Quickly to avoid an incoming squall

In the edge of town a verdant landscape
Lush wildflower meadows by the tree line
Families picnic, the heat to escape

Older folks with folding chairs that recline
Ice coolers beside them, and beers on hand
Whilst ladies cling to glasses of white wine

Alas, late afternoon; time to disband
Gray clouds gathering to cover the sun
The day’s almost over but it’s been grand

Everyone hopes tomorrow be finespun
Just like today, less heat! but lots more fun
