The Music of the Night

Existence can be harsh; and life can be unfair
Fate may be unkind; when all you have are dreams
But you rise above the ashes, onward you dare
In the music of the night, you ride the moonbeams!

Always you face hurdles, seemingly insurmountable
Unexpected obstacles strewn across your alleyway;
Quicksand can derail goals if you’re not careful
In the music of the night, steadfast you must stay!

The world often times can be cruel, unforgiving
And yet beauty appears to the most gruesome beast
From pain or tragedy; you’ll find triumph arising
In the music of the night, you’ll raise your fist!

For life’s but a four and half minute freeskate
Each element is a milestone you must achieve
You fall, but you get up! Failure’s not your fate
In the music of the night, this you must believe!

When you find yourself in the world’s grand stage
Take heart, you’ve been tested and ready to fight
You’ve endured a crucible in your young age,
Thus joyous you’ll skate to the music of the night!

This poem was inspired by the pair skating team coached by my daughter Amanda and her coaching partner Jim. Tarah and Danny won the national championships two weeks ago and they are going to the World Championship next month. In the long program, they skated to “The Music of the Night” from “Phantom of the Opera”, hence the title and a recurring phrase in this poem. They overcame many obstacles, particularly Tarah. Her father died two years ago; her mother is very ill; she herself has undergone hip surgery eighteen months ago. This is my tribute to their magnificent accomplishment!
