To My Mom
It must be a day ago; must have happened
She knows not what, her memory she strains;
She’s quite uneasy, life seemed incomplete;
Nothing comes to mind, and nothing remains!
She looks out the window into the blue sky
Fearful! She feels the cold in her veins!
All she’s forgot, she’d like to tell someone
Sadly, all that and more, she can’t remember
Oh! Always she wishes it were the weekend
Hoping someone will come to talk to her
Bring things that smell good, or taste sweet
But not the witch, who gives her things bitter
The door swings open; a young woman comes in
She’s uttering words or sounds she has forgot
Why can’t she speak my language? She murmurs,
As she shakes her head, looking distraught...
Then the woman kisses her on the forehead,
She cringes, and pushes back but could not!
Alas, she can’t move, in panic she screams
But from her lips, not a sound comes out;
And she’s all but forgot what words to say
To make her stop, she lets out a silent shout
With all her might, she lifts her right hand
She hits the woman hard; right in her mouth!
Blood in her lips; there’s hurt in her face
And tears well in the woman’s sorrowful eyes
But she says nothing; and gazes at her sadly
Then hugs her tightly; much to her surprise
And elicits an emotion she has long forgot
When so long ago, she sang sweet lullabies!
She tries to sing, but the lyrics escape her
Though the sweet melody she could still hear
What are the words again? She struggles,
But flashes come back, times of joy and cheer
Of a time she rocked a little baby to sleep,
From each of her eyes, falls a solitary tear!
Then the young woman sits in a chair by the bed
Holding both her hands; again talking loud
Animated! But a language she didn’t understand!
Emotions stir; though her face still a cloud
It feels like she’s staring into a looking-glass!
She forgot what it’s called; and she isn’t proud!
After an eternity, the young lady finally left
After hugging her for what seemed like forever...
With blinds drawn, she’s alone in a dark room
And in tears, hoping her memory she’d recover
But it seems nothing remains of her earthly stay
Oh! If only, with old friends she could get together!
