Wings of Night

"The night sky is a dignified black princess freckled with the stars. Get lost in her beauty to find it in your darkness"
by Curtis Tyrone Jones

Through empyrean heights the hawks ascend
Then dive with grace as twilight shades descend
Like shooting stars ‘gainst the multihued sky
While fading light stretches the hours gone by

The air is diaphanous and lace-like
As nightfall’s glow begins to softly strike
Fireflies flickering beneath the tall trees
The leaves ruffling in the stiff evening breeze

Atop a tall hill, lovers wide-eyed stare
At the new moon, just a ring barely there
A billion stars visible in the sky
He brushed her hair, and all she did was sigh

Out east they look at the ocean, now grey
While white-capped waves, rhythmic, like kids at play
His arms around her, he planted a kiss
And in that moment, they found perfect bliss

The night bore witness to a love affair
That blossomed with all night creatures aware
A few stars hid shyly behind the clouds
As silence wrapped the world in tranquil shrouds

Their thirst quenched and their desires satisfied
They departed as more stars start to hide
And the bleak darkness of the witching hours
Gave way to whispers of dawn’s budding flow’rs

Golden sparrows rise with the sunlit dawn
Their gilded wings a promise newly drawn
Through amber skies, they sing of fortune’s grace
A herald of hope in the morning haze!
