the quiet life

"A happy life must be to a great extent a quiet life, for it is only in an atmosphere of quiet that true joy can live".
Bertrand Russell
"The monotony and solitude of a quiet life stimulates the creative mind"
Albert Einstein

with age, we find the world
becomes a softer, sweeter song
the things that used to matter
don’t feel urgent, don’t feel wrong

we watch the younger crowd
all rush and rage and waste their prime
while we sit back and wonder
why we worried all that time

the petty squabbles vanish
like a sock lost in the wash
we swap the chase for comforts
like a blanket that’s so posh

no need for glory, status,
or some fleeting hollow fame
a biscuit and a crossword
feel like quite a proper game

we pick our friends as carefully
as fine and aged brie
no more the social circus
where we mingled aimlessly

it’s nice to drop pretensions,
to let go of who we’re not
the folks who love us dearly?
well, they’re all we’ve really got

our arguments are shorter,
now resolved in but a phrase
we know we’ll both forget it
in another couple days

why fight about the dishes
when you know the sink will fill?
we’d rather have dessert,
and maybe watch a netflix thrill

the aches and creaks are constant,
but we shrug and carry on
for what’s the use of moaning
when another day has dawned?

control? that’s for younger fools—
why not let the chaos be?
life humbles every one of us,
no matter what degree

and yet, amidst the madness,
there’s a joy that’s all our own
to sit in peace and marvel
at how much our world has grown

so let the youngsters chase and run,
we’ll sit and sip our tea
and laugh about the noisy selves
that we turned out to be

This is my tongue-in-cheek (and hopefully humorous) take of growing old.
