Dis-Advantaged

"Life is like the river, sometimes it sweeps you gently along and sometimes the rapids come out of nowhere."
- Emma Smith, author.

Growing up dis-advantaged
What he had all hand-me-down
None of which fit very well
He looked like a sad-sack clown
People look at him oddly
With no smiles always a frown
It hurt his little-boy heart
Out of place in the small town
But he kept a secret dream
Just wait till he’s fully grown

One day he started walking
For miles and miles trekking north
To fulfill his life-long dream
A better life here on earth
Others he met on the way
They formed small groups and set forth
For there’s very few to trust
Protection for all it’s worth
They faced all kinds of danger
Heat dirt hunger and so forth

Then he got to the border
But they wouldn’t let him in
For days he tried; no success
Give up his dream? a no-win
Days turn to weeks, weeks to months
Desperation sets within
Thus his mind lost its focus
He lost faith and trust in Him
So, down the river he trekked
Foolishly went for a swim!

Alas!

Floating down river, face up
One shot dead between the eyes
Looking up to the heaven
Praying the moment he dies
He wanted a better life
Under warm sunny blue skies
But it wasn’t meant to be
His bright sun never will rise
Yes, he walked for miles and miles
What a pointless sacrifice!

Aye! we all have fantasies
Our fairy-tale Camelot
Beautiful house all our own
Fleet of cars, maybe a yacht!
Is it wrong to have a dream?
To wish for a better lot?
For the downtrodden, maybe!
They’re the ones the world forgot!
