Stone Wall

"There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect."
- Ronald Reagan

a neat pile
rocks and stones
some polished
embellished!
the stone wall
ran north south
crisscrossing
the meadow
glistening
in the sun

the wall cuts
verdant field
on one side
the hillside
just beyond
the ocean
willow tree
weeping leaves
draped over
the stone wall

the tree cuts
long shadows
in the late
afternoon
sun behind
drooping tree
the stone wall
undulates
crooked line
many miles

the wall splits
the meadow
property
it divides
ocean side
from hillside
for reasons
unbeknownst
the logic
no one knows

but perhaps
two neighbors
unwilling
to settle
a dispute
better screw
each other
rather than
both of them
benefit

the stone wall
been around
maybe two
centuries
and it serves
no purpose
than to spoil
a landscape
beautiful
and charming

now both sides
of the wall
have become
different
for that’s what
walls can do!
walls divide
separate
segregate
breed distrust
and hatred

rather let’s
build bridges
that we may
overcome
variances
amongst us
let’s leave the
meadow be
to evolve
and then grow!

"A world without walls is the only sustainable world. . . . If the world is dominated by people who believe that their races, their religions, their ethnic differences are the most important factors, then a huge number of people will perish in this century." - Bill Clinton

"In a time of tumultuous change we have to remain confident and look to the positive results, and decide which walls should be destroyed and which should be built." - Mikhail Gorbachev (1989)
