Shibboleth

5 For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Ecclesiastes 9:5 KJV

A Sonnet

The Lord had shaped Adam from common dust

Then he blew the breath of life into him

And showered him with blessings to the brim

For He’s benevolent gracious and just

Regrettably, man strayed and met his end

The Book says, the wages of sin is death

So, when he died, with his very last breath

To the Giver, the breath of life ascends

It’s written, not an outworn shibboleth

The eternal truth from the living Word

Till He comes; and angels’ trumpets are heard

Bones, ashes; the dead stays beneath the earth

But the faithful no need to be forlorn

For the just shall arise that blessed morn

17 The dead praise not the LORD,
Neither any that go down into silence.
18 But we will bless the LORD
From this time forth and for evermore.
Psalm 115:17-18

“Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, Or the golden bowl is broken, Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, Or the wheel broken at the well. Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it.”
Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 NKJV
