It was the saddest smile he’s ever seen
Solitary tears fell from both her eyes
Her face a mirror of sorrows hidden
Her sad mien candid proof it’s no disguise
He gave her a tenner, a small token
Calm his guilt while his mind and soul chastise
Often, he asks why all these things happen
Why no one, even himself, seems to care
All blind to the needs of our fellowmen
Deaf to the cries of people in despair
If this be hell on earth, where is heaven
Are the heavenly hosts even aware?
It’s hard to sway others on what to do
He could try to persuade, not castigate
Convince others to see his point of view
Chances for success, slim, at any rate
Difficult to change hearts where coldness grew
He holds on, though success seems far and late
He tells himself that kindness must persist
Though oft his efforts seem but drops of rain
A heart that’s open cannot long resist
The call to ease another’s weight of pain
For even when the world seems lost in mist
A single hand can lead the blind again
It was the saddest smile he’s ever seen
Solitary tears fell from both her eyes
Yet with compassion, her face turned serene
She beamed a smile that will light up the skies
He left her there, her heart no longer lean
For even small acts in the darkness rise
