Grief and Sadness

"A thousand moments I had just taken for granted, mostly because I assumed there would be a thousand more." –
Morgan Matson

Short period for grief that’s all we have
Life intervenes then we must let go
To enjoy or not our prosaic existence
Ignore the hurt bid adieu to sorrow

But then the memories linger awhile
The joyful remembrances specially
To lighten our spirits on cold dark nights
When we miss them terribly

They live again whenever we recall
Golden precious moments spent together
It may feel they’ve never left us
In our hearts they stay forever

We try to go on as if nothing happened
Except the times we are alone
When the soft breeze kisses our face
And we hear no voices but our own

We face the world stoic and brave
With tears unshed stinging our eyes
Timid smiles to mask unfathomed loss
Our true feelings in grotesque disguise

Sometimes we see their faces in a crowd
Pinching ourselves to say it’s not so
Yet hoping for what could never be
They’re six feet under that much we know

Things shall never be normal again
But pain will ease and sorrow dissipate
In time we can smile feeling no guilt
Play laugh even socially participate

For we still have our own lives to live
To be our absolute best before we go
Always hoping we’ll meet them again
In a place where there’s no pain nor woe
