Icarus

Back turned

I never told you a lie
I was honest from the start
You knew about my wife
You knew who I was
You accepted the facts
Said I was worth the risk
And then when it got real
You quickly disappeared

I’m still leaving her
To tell the truth
I already did
There was nothing there for me
That I will ever miss
I didn’t leave for you
In truth it was
For you I stayed
To keep your name
Safe from the abuse
That anyway came

So now I still wonder
If I was but a thrill
Though you swore
For that you’d have looked elsewhere
So now I must move on from her
In order that I may one day
Be free of your blissful memory

The joy I felt
When tangled in your embrace
Taught me enough of love
That I now can say
I fear hell
For now I know what it is
To be abandoned by love
