The Midnight Calm

The heavy sun is fast asleep
in the forests of the dark,
the legs of the day tired
from their running,
the lamplighter gone home
after his nightly duties
as the midnight calm settles
upon the quiet village,

the hands of the clock
in a vertical position
at the highest point
after day drifts into
evening into night,

the nervous hours
shedding their tension,
the bustling growing weary
and falling into a deep sleep
as nature pauses
from the daily stress
and the Nightingale
sings her song
in rhythm to the
murmuring brooks.

All is quiet as the
midnight calm
settles upon the earth.
