Doubt
To those who do what they can.
I gasped afresh unsullied airs
And lingered amongst gray clouds, then
Looked far below at colored squares
That mark the boundaries of men.
Oh fleeting glimpse, oh lightning glance
Did I upon their faces look
At sadness, glee and soft romance,
And mark the paths the faces took.
I knew the hopes, the dreams, the fears,
I knew the loss, the hate, the pride,
I knew full well the falling tears,
And saw where each, our fates reside.
My efforts tried were true, but how
I know and see and know again
That in the then and in the now
My efforts were all done in vain.
My words were lost amid the din
Of roaring and of apathy.
Well meaning words are worthless in
A world of conscious atrophy.
And so I left; I all but fled
The world of people beyond aid.
But no clouds can replace the bed
In which I hide and dream and fade.
If I could but spread out my limbs
And look betwixt my left and right,
And see wings to give birth my whims,
Without regret I would take flight.
