To Be Continued

Our thick skulls are a double-edged sword
Protecting our fragile brains
When we are brained with an actual sword
Even as we are so hardheaded
That the truth about our lust for power
Can’t penetrate our thick skulls
And instead hangs over our head like a Sword of Damocles:
Desire can never be satisfied
Which is why the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse
Are all Headless Horsemen

To keep your head on your shoulders
Heed God’s continuing lesson
That desire isn’t meant to be satisfied
But to serve as a carrot
Since God much prefers carrots to sticks
Only resorting to sticks when we get stuck on our journey

The carrot of our desire will guide us
Until it finally gets through our thick skulls
That if we ever caught up to the carrot
Our ride would be over

At which point the Trickster appears
Carrot in hand
To take a bite out of what we always thought we wanted
Only to ask
“What’s up, Doc?”

But now, finally, we have a trick up our own sleeve
Replying:
Let’s take a wrong turn at Albuquerque–
You keep the carrot
And I’ll keep the ride going

As desire is transformed by knowing
Our own way forward
