The Reckoning

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."
Martin Luther King

The world grows darker with each passing hour
As shadows deepen, skies are set ablaze
From mountain peaks to hidden, twisted ways
Sauron’s gaze falls with wrathful, burning power

No cries are heard by heaven’s distant ear
For hope is lost beneath his watchful eye
Through lands of men his darkened forces fly
To drown the earth in sorrow, dread, and fear

Elves flee to shores where blessed lands reside
To Valinor, beyond the world of men
But dwarves retreat to guarded stone again
In Erebor, where they may yet survive

For mortal men, a grim choice must unfold—
To serve as orcs in cruel and crimson guise
Or perish when the fires of war arise
Their fate unknown, in darkness left untold

So tremble, earth, as night’s dominion nears
For none shall Sauron’s reckoning evade
The world shall tremble in his iron shade
And all shall know the weight of mortal fears

Yet whispers stir of hope within the night
A fragile spark the darkness cannot claim
Though evil spreads and skies are choked with flame
Some still believe the world may find the light
