The Long Goodbye

“No matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.”

She scrolled down the screen till she found him
His name, phone number, email and street address
Then she hit the delete button, her expression grim
A feeling of intense guilt and distress

It’s been a tumultuous period, five years of joy
And sorrows, extreme highs, severe lows
Laughter followed by grief, a deep void
How she survived, nobody knows

People warned her about him from the start
He’s trouble and will give her only pain
She chose to ignore the signs, to follow her heart
There’s mutual attraction no one can explain

Their first weeks together was heaven on earth
But the daydream turned into a nightmare
Twas a rollercoaster, but she thought it’s worth
The sacrifice, when she decided their lives to share

In hindsight twas the biggest mistake of her life
Now the past’s behind, the present a shamble
Vainly hoping the future can be free of strife
But all for naught, her dreams fade and crumble

So as she touched the delete button, her cel phone
Asked “Are you sure?” she thought for a nanosecond
She realized she will spend the rest of her days alone
She said “Yes,” as both her eyes reddened!

A poem I wrote ten years ago, loosely based on a friend's life story. I resurrected it from purgatory (a file folder in my laptop) made a few changes and said why not? Well, why not indeed!!
