The Island Getaway

“Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking
for boats to save; they just stand there shining.”
– Anne Lamott

One can only imagine a weekend like this
Time to enjoy calm and serenity and bliss
There will be no distractions for four days
And nightly moonlit dinners at island cafes

Small white puffs sail across the azure sky
At times hiding the blazing sun way up high
And casting shadows on the pearl white sand
A welcome relief as they walk in the strand

Weather’s amazing as they basked in the sun
They had wide-brimmed hats so as not to tan
But a breeze blows from the deep blue ocean
Soothed their warm skin like a magic potion

The smooth sea extends out into the skyline
As far as the eyes can see into the horizon
A tranquil sheet in multiple shades of blue
Cyan, cerulean, cobalt, sapphire and indigo

They lounged on chairs under a coconut tree
Watching young teens parasailing in the sea
Smiled at each other and dreamt of tomorrow
The life they will share and joys to follow

That night they strolled beneath the stars
Million points of light and Venus and Mars
A harvest moon shone and lit the sandy lane
A quiet night but for a faraway musical strain

In the calm of that night all the troubles
Of the outside world vanished like bubbles
Jobs, cars, friends, do they really matter?
All that’s essential, they have one another

Later they went to a popular place to dine
Freshly caught seafood and a bottle of wine
A table on the sandy beach by candle light
The perfect way to climax a beautiful night

And so the first day of their island holiday
Is history but there’s more of this getaway
Two more sun-filled days to get reacquainted
Know each other again, all they ever wanted

I wrote this poem nine years ago, way back in 2014. Totally forgot it, till I saw it this morning. Thought it's OK to be posted.
