Moderation
The DALIT is a short Filipino (Tagalog) poem, consisting of four lines (quatrain) with eight syllables each. The rhyming pattern is AABB. The quatrain is self-contained and has a valuable lesson. Although written in English, the five quatrains that follow were written in the DALIT format.
Happy life the motivation
Everything in moderation
Existence will be rewarding
When the days are gratifying

Cut back the salt add a li’l spice
A touch a smidge of something nice
Golden keys to a blissful life
Secret to living without strife

A pinch of this a dash of that
Will bring smiles to a Cheshire cat
If the stuff’s good don’t overdo
But if it’s bad say your adieu!

For life’s a sinusoidal wave
Up and down from birth to the grave
Hills and valleys stay in between
Our hearts healthiest at the mean

Life’s ebb and flow can be stormy
The fairest rose can be thorny
Learn to temper the highs and lows
Ward off life’s many direful woes

There’s a controversy regarding its origin. One school of thought states that the dalit is Spanish in origin, particularly because its syllabification is even or pares (pairs). Hence, it is said that the Spanish popularized the dalit in the Philippines. Another view holds that the dalit is indigenous, but the friars used its popularity to promote Catholicism, in the form of meditative verses.
