We grew up together, Jimmy and I
Best of friends since we were four
We simply connected, don’t know why
We never competed; never kept score!
Childhood games, we played a few
Some of them got us in real trouble
We played with fire literally, no clue
The dangers we faced; it’s not laughable
Inseparable we were those early years
Runaway adventures, often we pursued
Just us two; other times with peers
To be lost in the woods, but never could
Summer days, we spent together all day
Mock sword fights; afternoons in the beach
Chess matches, all kinds of horse play
Days so long ago, now out of reach
Despite our reckless boyhood antics
We managed to grow up to be teens
Unscathed, unharmed, never in a fix
But whip marks aplenty under our jeans
Thru adulthood, friends we remained
But life intervened, set us oceans apart
The days passed; the years gained
Oft I wish we could make a fresh start!
Now, its twilight; winter has arrived
All I have, memories of Jimmy, my friend
For he has passed on, while I survived
But friend he’ll be until my very end!
