Haunted Lane

“All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”
— Edgar Allan Poe

A Halloween Tale

The pale silvery moon the only light
In the winding deserted country lane
Overgrown bushes to the left and right

Leaves glistening from tonight’s sudden rain
Stars hiding away in the velvet sky
And a light mist enshroud the whole terrain

The road’s desolate with no passersby
Eerie ghostliness dims the mise-en-scène
As if any moment things go awry

Unnerved, she prayed something will intervene
Frightened, anxious, she didn’t want to go
Down the haunted lane with terrors unseen

Miles ahead, a cabin with lights aglow
But she could hear eerie unearthly sounds
Night shadows stir, and her courage sinks low

The darkness creeping over the damp grounds
Trees swaying, leaves rustling in the night breeze
From afar the mournful wail of bloodhounds

Dismayed, she forged ahead, with much unease
To the dark, though moonlit road, deserted
She could sense rustlings behind the tall trees

She pressed ahead, though every whisper said
To turn around, to leave the path behind,
But something deeper drew her on instead

The wind grew sharp, a howl from trees confined,
Their branches reached like fingers, cold and long,
Yet still she walked, though terror filled her mind

The cabin lights, a beacon faint and wrong,
Seemed farther with each step she took in vain,
Yet something told her she’d been there all along

Her breath grew tight, she felt a creeping strain,
The shadows seemed to whisper her own name,
But still she walked, ignoring signs of pain

Alas! the night consumed her; none could claim
The reason why, she disappeared from sight,
Her fate, now tangled in the unknown’s flame

Whatever she was doing there that night
No friends nor family could shed a light!

Epilogue

For weeks, they searched, till all their efforts drained,
Her footsteps vanished, lost without a clue,
The haunted road by mystery now stained

The house still glows, though no one passes through
Its windows bright, yet hollow in the frame,
For none dare seek the light that no one knew

Each night, a chill descends upon the lane,
And those who pass can hear her distant call,
Her presence lingers, tethered to her pain

Now none dare tread the path where shadows fall,
Her story whispers through the breeze untold,
For in the dark, the road devours them all

And still the road, where night and mist enfold,
Holds secrets only braver souls behold!
