Darkness into Light

A Soul’s Journey

Mindless cacophony
Movements in helter skelter
In the hustle and bustle
Of the city street...
But focused, only deafening
Silence he hears,
Interrupted by the cadence
Of his own heartbeat!

He walked east,
Towards the sun rising
Against a torrent,
Of countless men and women;
Rushing in the opposite
Away from nascent daylight
A horde of vampires
Just like in movies he’s seen

At the sun, he gazed
His eyes, he squints
Despite dark amber lenses
He was wearing;
A pale blue halo
Around the early rising sun
Perhaps an omen
Weather inclement a-brewing!

And hesitate he did
Fearful of what’s ahead;
Of what he sees not
Blinded by the sun so bright!
Yet look back, he dared not
To where vampires are going;
Where darkness rules
With demons of the night!

Onward, he forged ahead
Heeding an inner voice;
Away from sinister gloom,
Away from otherworldly shadows
Run east! he whispered
Away from the night
Into the warmth of the morning
Into the lush verdant meadows!

Finally, he’s out of the city
But standing all alone
In fields of green
Stretching to the skyline!
A dewdrop sits
On every blade of grass
Pearls glistening
In the sun’s reflected shine!

The shimmer undulates
In the viridescent fields
Punctuated by blossoms
In colors of the rainbow!
He felt serenity
In this restful place
Though unworthy, clad in filth
But immersed in childlike awe

For the night’s been unkind,
The darkness vicious
His garment’s torn;
Tortured, his spirit!
For allure’s ever-present
The night life an enticement
One can get lost in the glitz
And perdition, inherit!

For wherefrom he came
The night’s cheerless caverns
Terrors colonized
The recesses of his mind,
So, swiftly he bolted
Towards the dawn
At the earliest sign of light
His salvation to find!

The morning dew evaporated
With the sun quarter high
But the day’s effervescently
Lit in softer light;
And lo! The halo round the sun
Now pronounced
Grey clouds gathered around
He’s overcome with fright!

From the heavens, it poured
But the raindrops refreshing;
And he felt cleansed
From all filth and grime!
And he stood there
Under the heavenly downpour
Once again, he’s a child
Without a care in springtime

In a moment, the clouds parted
The golden sun shone
Yonder a brook; still waters
Gleaming under the cloud-free sky
His garments now white
Brilliant in the mid-day sun
He lay by the waters, and
Flowed into sleep after a long sigh!

This is my chronicle of a soul's journey from darkness into light. I used metaphors of night and day, urban against rural landscapes, to illustrate a soul's circuitous and tortuous search for salvation.
