The Rape of Mariupol
Single-horned beetles slither across the plains
And camouflaged dragonflies hover overhead
Metallic eagles soar across cloud-free skies
While shooting stars stoke fear and dread
Lightning bolts strike while thunderclaps boom
Although not a solitary rain cloud can be found
Thick black smoke in all directions spread
Buildings morph to rubble with deafening sound
Brimstone rains from heaven through the night
The city skyline silhouetted in the brightly lit night sky
Fourth of July fireworks; thousandfold more lethal
Dante’s inferno, the whole world gone awry
Deserted wide avenue; windows shattered shuttered
In a sidewalk among the debris a shiny red shoe
Absurdity! Dali-esque reminder of the horrors of war
Anguish! Misery! cosmos and humanity gone askew
Unimaginable! That it would come to these
Brother against brother, neighbor fight neighbor
Bloodstains everywhere, vividly red in newly fallen snow
The red rider looks on admiringly at his labor
Alas!
The mad man watches from afar in his valhalla throne
He has sent his servile minions with delight in his eyes
Admiring the pale rider doing his bidding
Thereby writing a sad epithet to his soon demise
History has a long line of psychopaths who ruled
The mad man will not be the last of his kind
But he will be in the dustbin of history soon enough
And when he’s gone the whole world can unwind!

3aWe’re in the middle of a Salvador Dali dream world. Surreal! And Pablo Picasso’s real world a Basque town Guernica in Spain bombed two years before WW II began by Nazi and Fascist Italy. Dali’s “persistence of memory” is dreamlike-the melting of hard surfaces only happens in dreams a metaphor of things that are surreal that is now becoming a reality in the slaughter of Ukraine as what had occurred in Basque Guernica. Great metaphors Brod. Fave/love. Thanks Brod.

3a@Nelson Thank you for liking and faving. Glad you like my metaphors. I tried to make them as absurd as possible to conform to the poem’s theme. Like “Single-horned beetles slither” among others. I saw Guernica at the MOMA in New York years ago. Before it was returned to Spain. It is humongous and very impressive. Again many thanks.

3a@Nelson D Reyes Looks like Putin’s animals have been torturing then executing civilians. I hope they get their comeuppance.
