From the Ashes
Twilight it was, storm clouds rolled in
Lightning flashes tortured the skies
Torrential rain and fearsome winds
Power’s out as the tempest flies
Twisters touched down, vengeful demons
Wiped out all, to no one’s surprise
In the darkness, everyone prayed
That tomorrow, the sun will rise
Pitch-dark the night cold abysmal
The landscape decrepit and dead
Tragic scene post apocalypse
Deserted dull gray and rust red
Even the gray skies desolate
For the moon countless stars have fled
So, what is there to write about?
Nothing here but despair and dread
But a sliver of light appears
Far, far away in the skyline
A faint glimmer of hope perchance
Pledge that tomorrow’s sun will shine
It’s warm rays will vanish the gloom
Turn the day to roses and wine
That shimmer in the horizon
Although feeble, a welcome sign!
At last the sun rose above clouds
Devastation for all to see
The damage most horrifying
Doomsday dystopian scenery
There were no buildings left standing
Strong winds uprooted every tree
Lonely street sign in one corner
Amidst the wreckage and debris
The scene surreal, a bad dream
Nothing left; the town has vanished
Tree stumps, battered flattened buildings
Even cats and dogs, they’ve perished
Neither cars nor trucks in the streets
Gone are things that people cherished
Pools of water, gushing hydrant
Grim picture not for a tourist!
But all’s not lost, people survived
Slowly they came out of hiding
Tearful eyes the scene they surveyed
That they’re unscathed, that’s the blessing
With none but their clothes and their wits
Their goal focused on rebuilding
Phoenix will rise from the ashes
Take its place among the living
The depth of the human spirit
The never-say-die attitude
Lives in the hearts of everyone
Erasing their depressive mood
Out of the gloom the town will rise
Even better; at least as good
There’ll be excitement in the streets
They’ll celebrate as well they should!
