Code Blue...

An Ode to the Color Blue

Blue is the color of the clear sky
On a sunny cloud-free summer day
The ocean dazzles in shades of blue
As wavelets shimmer like kids at play
Blue is the color of planet earth
As seen from yonder Milky Way
And blue signifies our fervent hopes
That we’d return to Paradise someday

The king sits on an earthly throne
His blood is said to be royal blue
But divine right he doesn’t have
To claim dominion over me and you
Blue is a color worn by biblical priests
To honor and praise the One that’s true
Blue signifies the peace in our hearts
When to Him, we pledge our lives anew

Yet we say we’re blue when we’re sad
For blue signifies a sense of longing
For all we’ve ever lost along the way
And for all that we’ve been missing…
In the emergency room, we say code blue
To signify someone needs resuscitating
Let’s hope true blue friends are around
When we lose our way and we need healing!

It is the favorite color of most people, particularly men. Yet, blue has more complex and contradictory meanings than any other color.

Dark blue: trust, dignity, intelligence, authority

Bright blue: cleanliness, strength, dependability, coolness
(The origin of these meanings arise from the qualities of the ocean and inland waters, most of which are more tangible.)

Light (sky) blue: peace, serenity, ethereal, spiritual, infinity
(The origin of these meanings is the intangible aspects of the sky.)

Most blues convey a sense of trust, loyalty, cleanliness, and understanding. On the other hand, blue evolved as symbol of depression in American culture. “Singing the blues” and feeling blue” are good examples of the complexity of color symbolism and how it has been evolved in different cultures.
