There are justifications why solitary confinement
Has been considered cruel and unusual punishment
There is a reason why our Maker created Eve
To be Adam’s wife; she wasn’t created to deceive
For man’s a social creature needing companionship
Unequipped to handle solitude and loneliness
Isolation could render his mind to lose its grip
On reality, that in the end leads to despair and madness
We need to hear a human voice other than our own
The silence can be deafening, loud and overwhelming
Neither music, nor television nor a human voice on the phone
Can replace the uplift that human speech can bring
Most of us need to peer into another person’s eyes
To have a sense of belonging, perhaps to see ourselves
In the reflection, and in the process, we recognize
There is no difference between us and themselves
All of us need the human touch at one time or another
A tender kiss, a hug, a handshake, a pat in the back
When we are in sorrow, or when we think life is all over
The warmth of another person can put us on track
The isolated soul hardens and rejects its humanity
As it migrates into thought, from passion and loving
In the absence of human contact, it loses its vitality
The soul becomes marble, cold and unfeeling
