Birth of a Poem

And so, I paused a moment, there I stood still
As verses came to mind; the birth of a poem
Then a smile curled my lips; and a silent thrill
Gripped my heart, for at last, my spirit’s home!

For when words abandon me, I’m a boat lost at sea
Just like a bird whose wings have been clipped
In the dried-up river bed, I’m a leaf-less tree
I’m the ebony sky when the moon is eclipsed!

But moonbeams have lit up the cloud-free heaven
The lighthouse beacon led my boat safely ashore
Buds reappeared with the rains spring has given
And with new-found wings, I’m flightless no more!

Still smiling, I rushed to find pen and paper
To scrawl down my thoughts, the lines and rhymes
Lest the words be lost, down the abyss forever
For yes! my aged mind’s apt to do that sometimes!

With thoughts to paper, rhymes in black and white
At last, a peaceful serenity envelops my being
Ready to bid adieu to the day, welcome the night
Cheerful my mind’s still seeing and feeling!

I pray my mind could continue to create beauty
Or the magnificent universe I see, I’d verbalize
To paint the sunset, I feel my God-given duty
Before my mind goes to the yonder blue skies!
