Ashes to Dawn

We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm ourselves with knowledge: so many lives wouldn't have to be lost if there was enough disaster preparedness.
~Petra Nemcova

Flames roared through the streets
Homes consumed in blazing heat
Night burns with defeat
Smoke and embers choke the air
Grief and sorrow bring despair

Only ashes now remain
Loss and tears like falling rain

*****

From the scorched earth grows
New life rising, nice and slow
Hope in winds that blow
Like the phoenix, early morn
From the ashes, world’s reborn

New dawn breaks across the skies
From shattered earth, life will rise

This poem is dedicated to all the victims of the Los Angeles windstorms and the multiple fires so generated. May they be able to recover and reassemble their lives.
