Someday I’ll Be Back

It’s a lovely gloomy day.
Come, my dear, come out and play.
The shadows gather on the lawn
And whisper that the sun is gone
And never will come back.

The wind conveys that chilly news.
It’s frolicked all the afternoon.
It’s turned the puddles all to ice.
Let’s skate in darkness, it’s so nice
To see the trees so black.

Let’s watch the storm as it appears.
Feel it tickling both your ears.
Feel the lightning hit the ground.
Feel the thunder up and down
And raindrops on your back.

It’s such a lovely time to swim.
See the water rushing in.
See the foam so soft and deep.
It looks a perfect place to sleep
Beneath the water’s black.

I swear you are no fun at all.
I see you from the graveyard wall.
I see you pacing to and fro.
I ask you out and you won’t go
But someday I’ll be back!

I’ll settle underneath the sod
Beneath cool stone inscribed to God.
I’ll snuggle into rocks and clay.
I’ll tunnel through to where you lay
My grave dress velvet black.

And then I’ll give you such a hug
Ignoring maggot, worm and slug.
And then I’ll kiss your poor worn face
And I won’t mind the dusty taste
And you will kiss me back.
