In Dreams I Sometimes Live

In nightmares I am alive
Such a terrible fragility
I can’t remember now
How I stood that pain—
How sweet was your rescue
The cessation of that tedious breathing
The absence of weight—
In nightmares I have a heart
Such an awful responsibility
I must remember to be calm
Too much joy and it will break—
How it burst when I saw you
How I struggled for life
And at first the bleeding ached
But you won and freed my earth bound soul
In dreams I sometimes live
They too will pass
