White Elephants

We sit there

One angel, one devil

One good, one evil

One girl.

One boy.

Though as of late the distribution between both has become striated.

Maybe we don’t sit there

Perhaps I sit there,

Baggage slung in wrapped silk over my irises,

Blinding my unseeing eyes

My scars are fake jewels

Willing to stay under your deafening gaze

Well, you believe they are some great prize they are just my vices,

What you believe to be a platinum ring is a cracking piece of molded plastic

A White Elephant.

Though maybe we don’t sit there

Perhaps you sit there,

But then again,

How could you sit there?

Calm and caring,

A face of falsities sitting atop your devil scales;

a new layer of baptized skin;

Worn like a crown

A signal of veterancy in the one area at which you excel,

Apologizes.

And as much as I hate you for making me fall for you,

I hate that I did it more

I hate that I tumbled and came out crippled.

Came out with our blood on my shaky hands.

I’m sorry I love you.

I’m sorry I love your lies,

Your wrongs

Your rights

You.

But if there is one thing you do best,

It’s dragging my willing body back

Begging me for a forgiveness I don’t want to give

But how could I say no to you?

It would take a million “I’m sorry’s” chanted to my tearstained face for me to forgive you

But that is what you do

You’ve rehearsed a hundred times over,

You take my moving body and shuffle it along

Right back into your arms

And we sit there

You, repeating the chants that brought me back before,

Because how could I hate something I want so much?

“I’m sorry; I love you.”
