Rafael Alberti

I bid you goodbye

I bid you goodbye, Love, and am not sad.
Thanks, my love, for what you've given me,
only one slow and lengthy kiss
which turned into sorrow when you left.

You couldn't understand, did not comprehend
that it was a final love, desperate;
neither did you intend to drive me away
when you so cold-heartedly hurt me.

I cried so much that day that I don't want
to think I should expect the same suffering
each time that love which iluminates you,

upon denying it, reappears in your life.
Your light is him when my light dims,
your only love when my love subsides.
