That’s Too Hard

I go to the store, it costs money to eat.
I go to the doctor; they’re never trained right.
It costs money to live, costs money to cheat
Your way through an endlessly losing fight.
I turn on the tv to see trash upon trash,
No one has to try when your standards are low.
The movies, shows and music are more about cash
Than the talent or dreams that are earned or bestowed.
Everything from the laws to the names
Of the streets that you pass by every day
Are subpar and bankrupt, they’re more of the same
Filthy “just good enough” all the sheep make okay
With their disgusting apathy.
Their gross, rancid indifference.
Instead of striving for what could be
They view subpar with deference.
I hate them for their stagnation,
I hate them for not growing,
I hate their corrupt nation
And for all those never knowing
That nothing’s ever good enough,
Fuck growth, embrace decline.
Nothing should be good enough,
But trying is hard and takes time.
I can’t do shit to change the world
But I promise I do more
Than the millions who put up their walls
And bolt their inner doors
Just by me hating, yeah by hating
Everything and everyone.
The meaning of life is progress
Yet they think that they’re all done. Right.
I hate them for their stagnation,
I hate them for not growing,
I hate their corrupt nation
And for all those never knowing
That nothing’s ever good enough,
That no one ever cares,
That nothing’s ever good enough:
Just offer thoughts and prayers.
“God will solve the problem,
Or the government; not me.
I don’t want to do or think
About the way that things could be.”
Fuck them and their indifference,
Their selfish apathy,
Their gross and rancid deference,
Their mediocrity.
‘Cause the thing they never realize,
They never stop to see
Is how close the subtle line is
Between the types of apathy.
Because what’s the difference really
(And please try to think real hard)
Between societal acceptance for
Bad media, bad art,
And

Passing a starving homeless person begging for food

Seeing someone screaming for help and figuring someone else will take care of it

Hearing about the latest brutality of a person of color by branches of law enforcement that are given more money than most countries give their entire militaries

Understanding women and people of color get paid much less than white men on average

Being aware of the people kept in cages at our southern boarders

Learning that six out of every one thousand rapes result in incarceration

Remembering that African Americans are incarcerated at five times the rate of other ethnicities

Realizing that capitalism is supposed to revolve around free market enterprises, and yet our government has always conspired to punish free enterprise

Knowing that there’s a fine line between patriotism and nationalism that we crossed about eighty years ago

And doing nothing, and not giving a shit,
And forcing yourself to forget,
And putting up walls to defend yourself
Or distract yourself
Or make yourself feel better,
But never fix, never help,
Never grow or progress
Because of. . .your disgusting apathy.
Your gross, rancid indifference.
Instead of striving for what could be
You view subpar with deference.
I hate you for your stagnation,
I hate you for not growing,
I hate your corrupt nation
And for never ever knowing
That nothing’s ever good enough,
Fuck growth, embrace decline.
Nothing should be good enough.
But don’t worry. Everything’s fine.
