I Like Cutting Onions

For Sarah, who proved to me that I had never been in love before

If I was a bumblebee
I’d buzz around your ear
And whisper all the nothings
Slow and sweet for you to hear.
If I was a beaver
I would build us both a home
Where we would float on twigs of love
Above a sea of foam.
If I was a marmoset
I’d climb the tallest tree
And carve your name among the boughs
For everyone to see.
If I was a garden gnome
I’d whistle up a song
And as I’d plant seeds in your garden
Even weeds would sing along.
I could be a lot of things
In my quest to express
The feelings that I have for you.
Though I must confess
That because you make me feel so good,
So happy and carefree,
I can’t help but feel a sadness
For the emotions lost to me.
So when I get too happy,
And my eyes get too dry,
I’ll go and cut an onion
'Cause they always make me cry.
