Poetry Is Like Farting in Public

Because bodies make a fart joke of social hierarchy
etiquette used to dictate that when someone
passed gas at, e.g., a dinner party
the polite thing to do was to pretend
the fart never happened

I don’t know if this still holds true
because I, too, hold in my farts
but I have let it slip
that I write poetry
and people are always very polite about it

So, I do know that
bodies must be beautiful
and words must be dutiful
