Downhill

I took you to the hillside up those winding roads
I took you the far side of the snow
We went across the melting ice, skating on truth and lies
Emptied a bottle on the rocks and I put in a note
And it said that when the cold winds stop
And the birds circle the clouds
When the snow will thaw,
My words stuck in your craw
That’s when I’ll come back around
I’ll take pictures aplenty by road signs
So they remind me of distance walked
I’ll leave echoes in my voice by screaming my lungs out
So I don’t forget the things we talked
I get in my car a little ways away
And I grip the steering, twist in the key
And you’re waiting for me across the street
But I just want to roll the windows down and leave
Your breath is painting words, all foggy
Your shoes are slipping, your socks all soggy
You can’t keep up with the thoughts in your noggin
We’re reduced to concepts in the wind
Hot coffee and cold stares
An avalanche imminent as sirens blares
I’m silent, scared of these violent ends
And you grip my hand, but I don’t care
I want to forget, I’m want to regret
I want a cigarette, and lingering stares
You drowned in the lake,
Staring at your own reflection
And you took with you my heart
The ghost of affection,
Utmost perfection
