I’ve seen you greyed out
In monochrome September
Umbrellas in a thunderstorm
The rain took all you remember
A stranger in a crowd
Jostled about by circumstance
Praying desperately to the powers that be
To make sense of what you can’t understand
The moon isn’t beautiful tonight
And the stars don’t respond
They stare unblinking and stoic
From the unfathomable beyond
And I’ve seen you in your frayed out
T-shirt in October
Driving without a glance
In your rear view mirror
You ignore the rushing fields
Blur out the thoughts, all furious
Whitened knuckles on the steering wheel
Are you blissful, ravaged or delirious?
You can’t escape the whirlwind inside you
Chaos becomes your sanctuary twice
Tear down your castles that sheltered you once
Brick by brick, maybe that’ll suffice
And I’ll be there when the skeletons
You buried, collude with the ghosts
As they dance in the dark
With your nightmares and your foes
When they sharpen their knives
Whetted appetites on swords
When you poked the sleeping dragon
And made off with its hoard
I witnessed you speak of love
With hatred in your mind
Show dreams to lovers aplenty
Knowing it’s dust they will find
Bury your head in the sand
Or hide amidst the snow
What you concealed from yourself, even
Now the whole world knows
