the poet

“Poets utter great and wise things which
they do not themselves understand.”
Plato

his spirit lifts suddenly
now that his thoughts on paper
when verses at last written
his sadness turns to vapor
poetry’s his quick release
when dark, it lights a taper
writing serves as atonement
when he’s in the grim nadir

he writes to unleash himself
from shadows into daylight
to free his troubled spirit
from all affliction and spite
to achieve sweet harmony
and true contentment outright
to attain an inner peace!
for all that he’ll always write

through the written word alone
he could bare his tortured soul
convey his innermost thoughts
confess then again be whole
many heartaches he’s survived
a fate out of his control
by writing he takes command
make life a well-scripted scroll

to poets such as himself
‘tis the daily exercise
best done from early evening
till the next morning’s sunrise
there’s no gold at rainbow’s end
no promise of paradise
expiation and fulfillment
self-satisfaction the prize!

“Blessed are the weird people:
poets, misfits, writers
mystics, painters, troubadours
for they teach us to see the world through different eyes.”
