Butterfly

“Butterflies can't see their wings. They can't see how truly beautiful
they are, but everyone else can. People are like that as well.”
Naya Rivera

After five days the egg hatches
Atop a young snapdragon leaf
The caterpillar starts to chew
Its appetite beyond belief
A few days its size quadrupled
Nonstop gorging with no relief
Fattened it morphed to a cocoon
Larva dies, but no time for grief
Neath the earth in pupal chamber
Knowing that its time will be brief
When the morning blest comes to pass
In myriad colors, heaven’s gift
Wings aflutter the butterfly
Basks in sunshine in bluest sky

From our mother’s womb we emerge
Quickly we consume chomp and gnaw
The mood and milieux we absorb
Till quintuple our size we grow
Physical food material things
Just everything that’s apropos
Nutrients for the soul as well
So that our Maker we would know
Then we die, our earthly stay done
In burial chambers down below
But when the blessed morning comes
We rise in garments white as snow
We’re butterflies wings aflutter
We’ll sing praises to our Maker!
