I.
The chirping crickets the hoot of an owl
In the calm stillness of the autumn night
Clear skies red Betelgeuse shining so bright
In the gentle breeze one hears the wolf’s howl
At forest edge predators on the prowl
The silv’ry moon provides provident light
Still in the shadows hidden earthly blight
And in the darkness, unseen hunters growl
In the rolling fields asleep on their feet
The herd of cattle and the flock of sheep
Unmindful contented their lives complete
Snug and secure in the fortified keep
For the shepherd acts at a young lamb’s bleat
The farmer’s rifle maketh the wolves weep
II.
Misery despair signs of the end days
There are wars rumors of wars pestilence
Famine death; the world suffers in silence
And the skies are grey; foggy purple haze
Gray wolves in sheep’s clothing in every place
Pushing fools to misdeed and violence
And false prophets thrive in the turbulence
A sorrowful fate for the human race
Amazingly, children of faith secure
And blest with God’s graces whilst in the keep
With pure hearts immune to the world’s allure
Protected by angels the flock of sheep
Wolves await outside leaving telltale spoor
But God’s children are peacefully asleep
