The Heart You Stole

Though lovers be lost, love shall not.
Dylan Thomas

It hurts badly where my heart used to be
Heart, you stole; then vanished without goodbye
My days ever since seldomly with glee

You abandoned me; never told me why
Discreetly! else I would have given chase
I woke up, my universe gone awry

Gone like the mist, perished without a trace
You took my heart but left the memories
To torture me in my sad lonely place

You I see in my dreams and reveries
Though waking up without you hurts so much
And minutes of the day are centuries

My lips beyearn your lovely face to touch
My hands crave for you, to stroke and caress
Your eyes, your hair, all of you my nonesuch

Your sweet melodious voice always impress
It brings comfort to my besotted soul
Talk to me! for your words bring me gladness

Please come back! Return my poor heart you stole
Last I saw you, day of the accident
Ever since then, I have never been whole

But where are you? Days, weeks came and went
Since the day we’re side by side in the car,
Through the bed-ridden hours I have spent.

I remember the crash, the dreadful scar,
The silence after, your hand still in mine,
But then the light that pulled you far too far.

Why didn’t I see the shrouded design?
The truth now dawns, I’m lost in dismay—
You never left me; you crossed the divine.

Realization steals my breath away,
You’re gone, forever, no hope of return,
Your absence now is more than mere delay.

In darkness, I weep and for answers yearn,
How cruel is fate, to steal my would-be bride
And leave my heart to ache, my soul to burn

How can I live, when all of me has died,
Forever lost the day you left my side?
