A Valentine Sonnet
A broken heart heals but the scars remain
Constant reminders of how love can hurt
Of the disappointments, the gnawing pain
And all the dreams that crumbled into dirt
And yet when romance comes knocking again
The heart relents, and welcomes love anew
Full of hope, the past all but forgotten
And dares to trust, that love will follow through
But love is fickle, fragile as the tide
It lifts us high, then dashes us below
Still, hearts will risk the pain and open wide
For love’s sweet fire is worth the afterglow
Though scars remain, they do not bring despair
They show the heart still longs, still dares to care
