Second Thoughts

"With that strange knowing that comes over me, like a clairvoyance, I know that I am sure of myself and my enormous and alarmingly timeless love for you; which will always be."
~Sylvia Plath

I wish I had clairvoyance for a time
To see ahead and dodge each twist of fate
Perhaps a glimpse would make my choices rhyme
And guide my steps before it is too late

A crystal ball might show me what’s to come
The future spread before me, clear and wide
But what if all I see leaves me struck dumb
And dread takes hold where confidence should guide?

Telepathy could sharpen mind and heart
I’d know the truth before it’s even said
Yet hearing thoughts may tear my peace apart
Unspoken fears could haunt me in my bed

To see tomorrow might distort today
And lead me down a path I shouldn’t tread
Perhaps it’s best to trust in life’s own way,
And let the present moment fill my head

My five good senses, flawed though they may be
Have served me well through trials, joy, and strife
To wish for sixth might rob me of the key—
A simple trust in the unfolding life

For even if I stumble, even fall
I’ll learn from every step I make alone
The future’s veil is not mine to recall
But here, today, I’ll make my journey known

So I will leave clairvoyance in the dark
And trust in what the present has to show
The future waits, although distant and stark—
In time, its mysteries I’ll come to know
