Sable Sky

I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.
– Vincent Van Gogh

The sky is darkest in the midnight hour
When the new moon reflects not borrowed light
The world appears mysterious but not dour

For the darkness conceals the earthly blight
And all that’s visible are stars twinkling
Accentuating the magic of the night

The crushed-velvet sable sky shimmering
Nascent moon just a big ring in the sky
While the night breezes softly comforting

So peaceful the world nothing seems awry
But out there in galaxies so distant
Upheavals unseen by the naked eye

Black holes swallowing stars in an instant
Supernovas implode planets collide
Galactic winds glow’ring and persistent

Here on earth the ebb and flow of the tide
Rhythmically lulling all, to sweet sleep
Unaware of turmoil the heavens hide

Unsuspecting, the realm is counting sheep
For all events billion light-years away
Hardly a care for people in the keep

And the sable sky cloaks all where they lay
Sound asleep to wake up another day

Without the dark, we’d never see the stars.
– Unknown

There they stand, the innumerable stars, shining in order like a living hymn, written in light.
