Love’s Demise

I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.
Maya Angelou

Second chances do come your way. Like trains, they arrive and depart regularly. Recognizing the ones that matter is the trick.
Jill. A Davis

I.
He held her hand, but he knew it’s over
Not an ounce of affection in her eyes
Sad lonely life he’s doomed to discover
None but himself to blame for love’s demise

Fine pearl he’s found, but he’s unsatisfied
With meandering eyes, he played the field
Now the jewel’s gone for good from his side
His fractured heart since then remained unfilled

The decades he spent single and alone
Failing to find someone to spend life with
A cursed life! a monarch without a throne
And soon he surmised love is just a myth
A fable for the unwise and the young
Foolish feelings that should remain unsung

II.
But in life’s twilight years he realized
The full weight of his errors and blunders
Opportunities lost; regrets disguised
His sad life bereft of joys and wonders

He prayed for one last chance for contentment
To fill the black hole in his aching heart
Whose emptiness the source of his torment
From nirvana; he’s pensively apart

Then one lovely morning, unexpected
Voice, he hears in a busy city street
And magically he felt connected
Lady of his youth with a smile so sweet
Must be an answer to his hopes and pray’rs
This time he’ll make it right. May joy be theirs!
